Maersk talent speaks up at ‘One Young World’

Thirteen young Maersk employees weighed in on a variety of topics, including transparency and integrity, at the 3rd annual 'One Young World' summit held over the weekend in Pittsburgh, USA.

The annual event held by the charity, One Young World, mixes political leaders like Bill Clinton and Kofi Annan and CEOs like Twitter's Jack Dorsey with aspiring members of the next generation of global leadership.

Growing the talent pool

This year, thirteen Maersk employees from twelve growth market countries joined 1,300 delegates from organizations all over the world to share ideas, experiences, and work toward commitments to positive change in areas including: education, global business, health, human rights, leadership and governance, sustainable development and transparency and integrity.

The event is a valuable opportunity for Maersk to develop and inspire would-be leaders, especially in growth market countries where competition for the business, and for the talented people needed to drive it, is strong. In 2011, 33% of Maersk global revenue and 53% of global profit came from growth markets.

Challenging the status quo

On the topic of transparency and integrity, two Maersk delegates joined speakers selected by One Young World from global companies like Shell, Barclays, Unilever and Siemens.

From Maersk, Oyewole Akande from Damco in Nigeria and Mary Ann Robles from Maersk Line in the Philippines spoke about how they deal with corruption and opaque processes in their countries, the role strong company values play in the employees' motivation to fight corruption and society's role in stamping it out.

"I'm Nigerian. People meet me and that's the association they make—Nigeria and corruption. But there are a lot of Nigerians, both in the private sector and the government, working hard to change that," says Akande, a key account manager in Nigeria for Damco, the Maersk freight forwarding and supply chain management company.

Akande described Damco's efforts to refuse the 'incentives' that some Nigerian officials require to do their job, characterizing it as a difficult and ongoing battle.

"Corruption is certainly not just a Nigerian problem or a problem only in government. Too often it is seen as 'just the way it is' by the people. Putting a stop to it starts with each of us changing the mindset and not accepting things 'as they are,' then working together for something better," he says.

The Maersk Group's anti-corruption policy is to flatly oppose corruption in its dealings with governments and business. Maersk is also a member of the UN Global Compact and is participating actively in the anti-corruption working group.

Thirteen Maersk employees participated in the One Young World event from several different Maersk businesses and countries, including Hong Kong, South Africa, China, Brazil, Nigeria, Philippines, Panama, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Ecuador and Egypt
